Diplomas - Over 800 schools and over 150 colleges are in consortia offering the first 5 Diplomas which started this September - Construction and the Built Environment, Creative and Media, Engineering, Information Technology, Society, Health and Development.

The Diploma combines theoretical study with practical experience and develops skills highly valued by employers and universities. There will be 17 Diploma lines available throughout England by 2013, each available at Levels 1 (Foundation), 2 (Higher) and 3 (Advanced). The Advanced Diploma will be equivalent to 3.5 A-Levels.

Diplomas are part of the wider national 14-19 reform programme to encourage young people to continue learning for longer, by widening their choices and helping them get the qualifications they need to succeed in work and life. All 17 Diplomas will be available in areas across the country by 2011.

Many universities, such as Warwick, Manchester and Leeds, are backing Diplomas as having the potential to be excellent preparation for the most demanding university courses.

More information about Diplomas is available at DirectGov as well as details of where Diplomas can be studied. For further information on 14-19 Education and Skills visit the DCSF website.
