Count Them In

Dame Rosie Winterton DBE, MP for Doncaster Central attended a Royal British Legion event in Parliament on 13 September, in support of the ‘Count Them In’ campaign.

It is estimated that there are currently between 6.5 million and 6.7 million members of the Armed Forces community living in the UK.  However, there is currently limited information available about the exact numbers, location and needs of this significant group.

Rosie met with representatives of the Royal British Legion and veterans to discuss the ’Count
Them In’ campaign and said. “It is crucial to look after the brave men and women in our Armed Forces, both while they are serving and when they have retired.  It cannot be right that our
servicemen and women, veterans and their families are effectively hidden from official statistics, which makes it difficult for statutory, private and voluntary powers to fulfil their Armed Forces Covenant commitments.”

The ‘Count Them In’ campaign is calling for new questions to be added to the next census to inform public bodies, local authorities and charities, so that the needs of serving personnel, veterans and their families can be better met.

Charles Byrne, Director-General of The Royal British Legion said: “As a nation we promise to provide lifelong care and support for those who serve our country.  By adding questions to the 2021 UK Census, we can help public bodies and charities deliver the best services they can for our Armed Forces community, when and where it is needed most.  We thank Rosie for adding her support to our campaign: together I’m confident that we can make the next census count for our Armed Forces community.”
