04 Feb 2009

Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith today brought together representatives from the police, charities and public and private sector organisations – including Age Concern, Citizens Advice Bureau, Focus DIY, B&Q, the Association of British Insurers and Aviva – for a special crime prevention summit to discuss practical measures to help keep crime down.

There is also nothing inevitable about a rise in crime in difficult times. By taking practical measures to protect our homes against lazy and opportunistic burglars, we can keep crime down. There are some very simple things that help, such as having and using good door and window locks.

The Home Office website has new home security advice pages which can be found here. These web pages include a new online personalised home security self assessment, ‘How secure is your home?’ that helps people to grade the security of their home in a few minutes. It then provides simple advice about the practical steps they can take to improve their home security and who they can contact for help.

The interactive home security assessment tool is available here.
