The Government has today published a comprehensive action plan to secure Britain’s place at the forefront of the global digital economy, including universal access to broadband services, modernised distribution networks and a commitment to high quality UK content.

The interim Digital Britain report published today includes more than 20 recommendations which include proposals for:

  • universal access to broadband
  • next generation networks
  • the creation of a second public service broadcaster of scale
  • wireless radio spectrum modernisation
  • digital future for radio
  • a new deal for digital content rights
  • enhancing the digital delivery of public services

This interim report sets the agenda for Britain to become a fully-connected digital economy and society. It underlines the importance of the communications sector, its crucial contribution to the economy and its role in building Britain’s industrial future.

The report has five main objectives:

  1. Upgraded wired, wireless and broadcast networks.
  2. A dynamic investment climate for digital content and services.
  3. Diverse sources of high-quality UK content for UK users.
  4. Fairness or opportunity, accessibility and universality and promotion of digital skills and literacy.
  5. Network and user capability to allow efficient digital public service.
