Doncaster has 1,267 more people on the dole compared to a year ago.

The latest figures, released on October 12 by the Office of National Statisticsc (ONS), show the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance now stands at 10,167, compared to 8,900 in September 2010.

Rosie said: “This is a really worrying time. Families here in Doncaster are struggling with higher food prices and gas bills and many are worried about their jobs and their children’s futures.

“Our economy has stagnated for nine months and unemployment continues to rise, right here in Doncaster and across the whole country.

“Like every other country we’ve got to get our deficit down and that means tough decisions on tax and spending cuts. But by trying to cut spending and raise taxes too far and too fast this Government is getting our economy into a vicious circle.”

UK unemployment rose by 114,000 between June and August to 2.57 million, a 17-year high, according to the ONS.

The unemployment total for 16-24 year olds hit a record high of 991,000 in the quarter, a jobless rate of 21.3 per cent.

The number of people out of work and claiming benefits rose 17,500 to 1.6 million in September.
