A Doncaster woman who was “scared to death of computers” is now an award-winning volunteer helping others to get online.

Glennis Smith, 61, was this week named Senior Learner of the Year at the Yorkshire and Humber Adult Learners’ Awards 2013.

She also met with Rosie and Graeme Huston, editor in chief of South Yorkshire Newspapers, to discuss her experiences.

Rosie said: “I think the message from Glennis’s story is that you are never too old or lacking in confidence to learn.

“You can do it, it can change your life and often, as in Glennis’s case, it is the whole community that reaps the benefit of such learning.”

Glennis enrolled on the Online Basics course run by BMEED, based in Wood Street, Doncaster, in December.

She is now an ambassador for the organisation and is helping others to gain the same qualification.

Glennis said: “It gives me great satisfaction to help others complete the course.”
