Local News / Protecting traditional markets
Rosie, in her capacity as Minister for Local Government, is helping to lead a national campaign to protect traditional markets, like Doncaster, in the face of increasing pressures threatening their long-term survival.
Markets are a national tradition however the growth of out-of-town supermarkets, discount stores and the effects of the current economic climate has resulted in a prolonged decline.
The 400 indoor stalls in the newly refurbished former Corn Exchange and lively open air market in the heart of Doncaster offer local people and those from the surrounding region a great day out while also playing a vital economic role in the local community.
To ensure that the traditional market survives, the Government is taking action to support street, covered and farmers’ markets. The Government will champion the interests of all markets with a new body that will bring together key government departments, representatives from the retail markets industry and the Local Government Association.
Rosie said:
“Doncaster market is one of the biggest and finest markets in the North and has a rich heritage; lots of people I know enjoy a trip there. However the market also plays a vital economic role in the local community from providing jobs and business start-up opportunities, to often offering cheaper produce.
“I want market traders to know the Government is championing the traditional market, raising its profile and ensuring the industry has a voice in Government.”
