Rosie visited Shaw Wood Primary School in Armthorpe on Friday 1 February.

The Prime Minister asked Rosie to personally deliver a letter from him, offering his congratulations to Shaw Wood Primary School on achieving the DCSF International School Award.

Rosie says:

“I am very pleased to be able to pass on the Prime Ministers own personal congratulations to Shaw Wood School on their fantastic achievement. Shaw Wood staff and pupils have worked hard to achieve this award and I am glad that today we can celebrate their success”

The Prime Minister says in his correspondence to the school:

“I hope you will accept my heartfelt congratulations for gaining the award – it is a great achievement. Integrating an international dimension across the curriculum is an incredibly powerful way to motivate young people to learn and helps enable students to relate to people of all backgrounds with a sense of mutual respect and understanding. This is a profound lesson and an essential life skill. The DCSF International School Award is a real benchmark in this regard. Well done.”

Shaw Wood Primary School has worked very hard to establish links with other schools in Europe and beyond and they have both Spanish and Japanese language assistants.

The DCSF ISA is an accreditation scheme for curriculum-based international work in schools, open to all schools in the UK and supports schools to develop the following:

• an international ethos embedded throughout the school
• a majority of pupils within the school impacted by and involved in international work
• collaborative curriculum-based work with a number of partner schools
• curriculum-based work across a range of subjects
• year-round international activity
• involvement of the wider community
• evaluation from a variety of sources allowing schools to improve activities and an international programme
