On Wednesday 4 October, Rosie visited Freightliner, a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) at Decoy South Bank, Doncaster, DN4 5PD.

Freightliner’s Doncaster Railport provides an important logistics service to support local businesses in
Doncaster and South Yorkshire and they invited Dame Rosie Winterton to visit the operation and meet with staff.

The rail port supports four direct train services a day to and from Felixstowe port as well as two trains
of finished cars a week.  Using rail instead of road to move containers reduces the number of lorries on the busy A14 and A1M corridors, helping to reduce carbon emissions and road accidents.

Dame Rosie said “Doncaster has a proud railway heritage and the International Railport demonstrates that rail is also important to the town’s future economy and prosperity. Whatever changes may occur in our future trade with Europe and the rest of the world, Doncaster is ready to meet the challenges ahead.”

The train services support both the import of goods to distribution centres and factories and enables South Yorkshire businesses to have a direct route for their exported goods to the UK’s largest deep-sea port, from where ships depart to destinations all over the world.

Lindsay Durham, Head of Rail Strategy, Freightliner, said “We are proud to have a terminal in Doncaster and be part of the railway industry that supports skills and employment in this area.”
