Dame Rosie Winterton DBE, MP for Doncaster Central attended and spoke at the Armthorpe Miners memorial service on Sunday 4 September at the Miners Memorial Garden, Church Street, Armthorpe, Doncaster.

Each year the people of Armthorpe come together to remember the 89 miners who lost their lives during
the life time of Markham Main colliery from 1920 to 1996.  The event is organised by the Miners Memorial
Group in Armthorpe, and a short service is followed by the reading of the names, dates and ages of those who died with the laying of wreaths.

Rosie says “It is thanks to the hard work and commitment of the members of the Armthorpe Miners Memorial Group that we are able to come together in the memorial garden to pay tribute to the miners who gave their lives in what was a hazardous industry, and to reflect on the important heritage given to our communities by miners and their families here in Armthorpe and across Doncaster.”
