Rosie braved the needle to raise awareness of undiagnosed diabetes among thousands of people in Doncaster.

She was given a blood glucose test by campaigners from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), which includes Diabetes UK, who are launching an effort to identify sufferers.

The charity warns that if untreated, Type 2, the most common form of diabetes, can lead to strokes, heart disease and amputations while Type 1 can result in coma or even death.

About 15,600 people in Doncaster know they have the condition, but about another 2,700 are undiagnosed, according to IDF figures.

Rosie said: “Diabetes is a growing health problem both in Doncaster and around the UK, but if it is detected early then it can be actively managed.

“Estimates show there are almost 3,000 undiagnosed sufferers in Doncaster. I would encourage anyone who is concerned about diabetes to speak to their GP about having a blood glucose test, as I did.

“It only takes a few minutes, but it could save you years of illness.”

Figures show that 2.9million people have diabetes in the UK, but it is estimated that a further 850,000 people may be living with the condition.

Symptoms of diabetes include going to the toilet more often and especially at night, increased thirst, extreme tiredness, unexplained weight loss, genital itching or regular episodes of thrush, slow healing of cuts and wounds and blurred vision.

Visit www.diabetes.org.uk for more information about the condition.

Diabetes UK also has a support helpline – 0845 120 2960, or email [email protected].
