Member's of Parliament (MP's) are the individuals elected to be representatives for one of the 600+ constituencies in the United Kingdom, ordinarily have responsibilities to their constituents, party and to Parliament.
Their position within parliament means that they are better equipped to advise on problems, or gain responses to government departments. They are also able to raise certain issues in parliament both in written or oral form to the minister concerned.
With regards to their duties in parliament, MPs play an important role. Parliament is responsible for passing and repealing all the laws in the UK, therefore the ability for MPs to scrutinise, debate and vote on legislation allows MP the power to question the Government and to oppose any legislation which is not in the interest of their constituents.
However, MPs also act as their political Parties representative within their constituency and they have a duty to vote in line with the party's leadership on important issues.
As an MP Rosie aims to act in accordance with her responsibilities to her constituency, but she has additional responsibilities as Minister of State for Pensions and Ageing Society and as the regional Minister for Yorkshire and Humber.
The role of a Minister is to look after a specific area of policy or Government Department. In her role as Minister, Rosie is responsible for a number of issues including the state pension and pension reform. She is also responsible for the ageing society strategy, making sure that older people are financially capable and able to work beyond retirement without fear of discrimination.
A regional Minister is responsible for providing a sense of direction for a region, both economically and socially and therefore requires that person to facilitate dialogue between different government departments. Regional Ministers are also responsible for ensuring that government policy allows for different regional needs. Rosie is one of a number of regional ministers, and in her role she represents regional interest as well as championing the region within the government.
