Preventing Repossessions
In the current economic climate, more households are struggling with their mortgage payments and facing the threat of repossession. The Government is determined to help people to stay in their homes wherever possible and a range of measures is now in place to provide help at every stage to households struggling with their mortgage repayments.
More than 300,000 households have received help and advice with their mortgage since April 2008.

A new website has been set up to provide information on who can help (including links to helplines), information on government assistance schemes and how to access them and facts to dispel the myths around repossession – such as ‘I’m better off handing in the keys’ and ‘there’s no point going to Court’.

Building Stock
In July 2009, Housing Minister, Rt Hon John Healey MP announced the release of funding:
- to build 11,200 new homes;
- regenerate ten of the most deprived areas of the country, and;
- create 20,000 jobs in the building industry.
The announcements come hard on the heels of the
Prime Minister’s Housing Pledge – set out in
Building Britain’s Future - to invest an extra £1.5 billion towards building a total of 110,000 new affordable homes over the next two years.
Serving Tenants
The Government wants to ensure a high quality service for the tenants who live in them. For this reason, it has set out the directions of the new social housing regulator, the
Tenant Services Authority (TSA), to ensure tenants get a fair deal.
